The Society for Italian Historical Studies regularly awards the following three prizes: the Helen and Howard R. Marraro Prize in Italian History, the Ezio Capadoccia Prize for Best Unpublished Manuscript, and the Senior Scholar Citation.


Helen and Howard R. Marraro Prize in Italian History

The Society for Italian Historical Studies, in affiliation with the American Historical Association, regularly administers three annual Helen and Howard R. Marraro Prizes in Italian History. The late Howard R. Marraro made bequests to the American Historical Association, the American Catholic Historical Association, and the Society for Italian Historical studies, for the award by each society of a Helen and Howard R. Marraro Prize in Italian History. Each association has appointed its own selection committee. The amount of the annual award to be made by the SIHS is $750.00.

Alan Reinerman Prize for Best Unpublished Manuscript

The Society for Italian Historical Studies (SIHS), in affiliation with the American Historical Association, offers a prize of $400 for the Alan Reinerman Prize for Best Unpublished Manuscript on the history of Italy of dissertation length. Since the object of the award is to encourage fresh interest in Italian history, the prize is offered for the first or second study in the field by a scholar who has received the Ph.D. since January 1 of the previous year. Only current members of the Society for Italian Historical Studies (SIHS) will be considered.

Senior Scholar Citation

From time to time, the Society for Italian Historical Studies presents a citation to a senior scholar in recognition of distinguished achievement over the course of a career. No more than one such citation may be presented in a single year, and in some years no award is given.

SIHS Article Prize for Medieval and Early Modern Italian History

The SIHS Article Prize for Medieval and Early Modern Italian History will be awarded to the best English-language, peer-reviewed journal article on Italian history broadly defined by an early career author. The time period for “Medieval-Early Modern” includes roughly from the sixth century to the Napoleonic Wars. Geographical scope and disciplinary methodology are defined in the broadest possible terms. Early career refers to anyone who is in the process of completing their PhD or anyone who was within six years of completion when the article was made public. Only current members of the Society for Italian Historical Studies (SIHS) will be considered.

SIHS Article Prize for Modern Italian History

The SIHS Article Prize for Modern Italian History will be awarded to the best English-language, peer-reviewed journal article on Italian history broadly defined by an early career author. The time period for “modern” includes any time period from the Napoleonic Wars to today. Geographical scope and disciplinary methodology are defined in the broadest possible terms. Early career refers to anyone who is in the process of completing their PhD or anyone who was within six years of completion when the article was made public. Only current members of the Society for Italian Historical Studies (SIHS) will be considered.
